A short conversation with Thomas feiner about his collaboration with Steve Jansen.

How did you take part in Steve Jansen's live concert that will be released next month on DVD? I know that you were not physically present.

Steve put me in touch with Shoko Ise who was the director for the back-projections for the concert. Basically all the vocalists were asked to film themselves performing their tracks respectively, following certain guidelines Shoko presented. In my case she wanted a dark theme, dark background, strong shadow/light contrast, so this was arranged. Apart from that the vocalists were encouraged to film some extra material from their local setting - in my case I ran round filming dead leaves. The filmed material was then sent to Shoko for integration into her projections. And then to each song the vocalist performances would be projected in sync on a big screen, virtually present as it were.

Has Shoko made some editing to the video material you sent? Did you see the final result and are you happy with it?

I only saw a very small version of the film so far. She obviously did something to it, which was the intention all along. Changed tones, overlay it upon other footage and so on...

Do you feel comfortable with this kind of "remote" collaborations based on few guidelines and indications, or do you prefer to work being in the same place and constantly exchanging ideas with other artists?

I think I prefer to work alone in my chamber in general, but this can change depending on context.

Can you tell us something about future plans? New album, new collaborations, we're looking forward to hear your music again.

I'm currently setting up a new studio, and the idea is that I will focus next year to complete the solo album which has been a very long time in the making. No collaborations have been set yet, so we'll see about that.

Thank you very much Thomas, it was a pleasure for me to meet you and have this short chat.
Thank you, Gianluigi, for taking an interest. Best wishes
